Frizzy Hair

What is "frizzy" hair?

Frizzy hair is hair that does not align with the surrounding hairs. There are 2 main types of frizz categories. 1) Short hairs: short hairs sticking up from the scalp or throughout a strand of hair. You commonly see this type when you have new hairs growing and/are broken hair. 2) Wavy, curly hair that don't align with the other hairs around it to form a defined wave or curl.

Causes of frizz are humidity, damage, & genetics. Humidity is water in the air. Our hair, if not properly hydrated, will pull moisture from the air. When moisture penetrates into the hair, the proteins in the hair will swell. Different proteins swell differently. This swelling causes the hair to twist & bend in irregular patterns.

There are many ways to help with humidity frizz. Using styling products with silicones is one way. You will have to use a sulfate shampoo to remove the silicones. Sulfates are bad. They are bad in certain circumstances. When using hair products that contain amodimethicone, cetyl dimethicone, and/or cyclopentasiloxane, be sure to use a detoxing/clarifying shampoo. Yes, there are water soluble silicones. They will build up over time. It's best to detox them out. The majority of frizz fighting & smoothing hair products are going to contain silicones. And usually more than one type of silicone. Hair Damage. Damaged hair is when the hair's protective outer layer, the cuticle, has been chipped away at. This is usually caused by heat styling tools, not using a heat protectant, chemical services, and using heat tools, such as a flat iron, on wet-damp hair. When you use a flat iron, curling iron, wand, etc on damp-wet hair you boil the water in the hair. Yeap. This causes bubbles inside the hair shaft, causing hair shaft abnormalities & weakens the hair. Genetics. Look. The thing is genetics play a role in how your hair curls & waves. While the majority of hair may clump together perfectly for the perfect curl, you will have those hairs that desire to rebel. They are going to do what they are going to do. Similar to children. There are some kids who are going to do what they are going to do & damn the consequences.

My solutions:
Well, first off... if you live in the south east of the USA, you're screwed. No one wins down here. Humidity is so high in the "spring" & summer that you can just swim in the air. You are not going to achieve 100% frizz free hair. I believe we must first come to the realization that 100% frizz free hair is not the goal. We need to change our mindset, change the goal. Second, we need to properly care for our hair. I'm not going to tell you how to do that in general terms because each person needs various products & routines based on hair condition & life style. If you have kids- you probably don't have 3 hours a week to devote to your hair. For those whose hair cuticle is damaged, all chipped away, I would suggest proper hydrating & protein routine along with some styling products that contain silicones. Here's the thing. Damaged hair needs a lot of TLC. That means you will need a few different products and routines. You'll need a detox shampoo to remove the silicones. The silicones will help keep the good inside while blocking out the humidity. YOU WILL NEED TO FOLLOW RULES when using silicones, especially on damaged hair.
